Supreme Court Of India|18 September, 2000

JUDGMENT / ORDER

1. The petitioner in Writ Petition No. 47/ 1998, Shri Navin M. Raheja, who is present in person has submitted a note containing suggestions for protection of tigers. This note has been prepared as a result of discussions held at the meeting of the Steering Committee convened for the purpose.
2. Learned Solicitor General has also drawn our attention to an affidavit filed by Shri S.C. Sharma, Addl. IGF (WL), Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India together with a Report of the Committee which was constituted to look into the issue arising out of death of tigers at Nandankanan Zoo, Bhubaneshwar. A cursory look of the Report shows that much needs to be done both for the welfare of tigers in captivity in zoo as well as in the reserves. The situation is distressing and far from satisfactory and the manner in which welfare of animals is being looked into leaves much to be desired.
3. Learned Solicitor General submits that he shall consider the suggestions made by the petitioner Shri Navin M. Raheja and also the report and on the next date state as to what steps are required to be taken by the State Governments as also by the Central Government in this behalf. Let the needful be done within two weeks. Post after two weeks.
